PHA — Polyhydroxyalkanoate Family Biodegradable Resin Pellets Supplier China | Marine Biodegradation
PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoate) is a family of bio-based, biodegradable polyesters produced by microbial fermentation of plant sugars or lipids. PHA is unique among bioplastics because it is the only mainstream polymer family that biodegrades in marine environments while also being industrially compostable. Members of the PHA family include:
- PHB (Polyhydroxybutyrate) — the simplest PHA homopolymer
- PHBV (Polyhydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) — PHA copolymer with 3-hydroxyvalerate
- PHBHHx (Polyhydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyhexanoate) — more flexible PHA copolymer
- P3HB4HB (Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate)) — softer PHA grade
PHA is:
- 100% bio-based — produced by microorganisms (no agricultural land competition in most processes)
- Marine-biodegradable (TÜV OK Marine certified grades available)
- Industrially compostable (EN 13432 / ASTM D6400 certified)
- Soil-biodegradable and home-compostable
- In-vivo bioresorbable — FDA-cleared medical grades for implants, sutures, tissue scaffolds

PHA Subdivisions Available
| Subdivision | Description | Application |
|---|---|---|
| PHB Homopolymer | Stiff, brittle, fastest crystallization | Single-use packaging, marine single-use |
| PHBV (3% HV) | Slightly tougher than PHB | Injection molding, sheet extrusion |
| PHBV (8% HV) | Mainstream flexible grade | Flexible film, foam, coating |
| PHBV (12% HV) | More flexible, lower Tm | Coating, foam, controlled-release |
| PHBHHx | Poly(3HB-co-3HHx), low crystallinity | Film, foam, medical |
| P3HB4HB | Poly(3HB-co-4HB), elastomeric | Elastomers, medical, slow-release |
| PHA Medical Grade | FDA Master File, ISO 13485 traceable | Implants, sutures, scaffolds |
| PHA Coating Grade | Low MFI for paper coating | Compostable paper cups |
