PBAT (Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate) is a fully biodegradable, aliphatic-aromatic copolyester that is the flexible backbone of most compostable bag, mailer, and mulch-film formulations. Unlike PLA which is rigid and brittle, PBAT provides the elongation, tear strength, and impact resistance converters need for blown film and cast film applications.
PBAT is typically:
- Blended with PLA at 20–30% to add flexibility and tear strength to rigid compostable structures
- Soil-biodegradable — mineralizes 90%+ in soil within 6–12 months (TÜV OK Soil certified grades)
- Industrially compostable under EN 13432 conditions in PBAT + PLA blends (PBAT alone is not industrially compostable above 90% mineralization but is biodegradable)
- Processable on conventional LDPE/LLDPE blown-film lines with adjusted processing parameters
