Why Flame-Retardant Compounds?
Standard engineering plastics — PA66, PBT, PC, ABS, PP — burn readily when ignited. For most electrical, automotive, appliance, and building applications, that is unacceptable. Flame-retardant compounds solve this through one of three mechanisms:
- Halogenated FR (Br/Cl) — most efficient, lowest loading (10–20%); releases less heat; cost-effective. Concern: smoke toxicity and corrosiveness, restricted under some directives (e.g. certain halogen-free OEM specs).
- Phosphorus-based FR — forms char layer; mostly halogen-free; used in PC/ABS, HIPS, PBT, and increasingly PP.
- Nitrogen / melamine-based FR — endothermic decomposition releases non-combustible gases (N&sub2;, NH3); used in PP and PA66 halogen-free grades.
- Mineral fillers (MDH, ATH) — endothermic decomposition releases water; used at high loading (40–60%) for halogen-free PP, PA.
